Starting today, we’re relaunching our daily American Consequences letter.
What that means for you is that we can feature a whole lot more of Editor in Chief P.J. O’Rourke, Executive Editor Buck Sexton, and the other economic and political journalists who you love to read… or, perhaps, read to hate.
We’re excited to start sharing articles and essays from our magazine as they come in from our reporters in the field, rather than waiting until our entire monthly issue is ready.
So going forward, you can expect a note from us each morning at about 7 a.m. Eastern Time.
And, of course, we’ll continue to feature news you are unlikely to see anywhere else… powerful ideas on building your wealth… and life-changing insight from some of the world’s most successful people.
With that in mind… we bring you a report from the ground here in Baltimore, Maryland. Is it truly as bad as President Donald Trump says?
Migrant numbers at the U.S.-Mexico border have been breaking records for months. The flow of illegal border crossers from Central America – predominantly Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador – is on pace to break a million in 2019.
But here in Baltimore, according to research from Princeton Policy Advisors, we can count on 56 murders per 100,000 citizens.
That number is only 50 in El Salvador… 38 in Honduras… and 22 in Guatemala.
This coming after our old mayor left amid a health-food children’s book scandal so strange it makes our brains mushy. (You’ll have to read up on it yourself to believe it.)
Meanwhile a group of scooter-riding teenagers surrounded and beat a 59-year-old Baltimore Police employee (video here)… another group of teens pistol-whipped a woman holding her five-week-old son… and our newest deputy police commissioner was robbed at gunpoint while out for a stroll with his wife.
All that in the past few weeks…
Still, we love Charm City, rats and all.
Well, some of us do. At least some of the time.
That is… P.J. lives up in New Hampshire. I take the train up from D.C. every day. (To be fair, we hear there are more rats in D.C. And there are certainly more rats of the two- legged, political variety.) And Buck is soon to head back to the Big Apple.
Perhaps the President is on to something… Is it time to “Make Baltimore Great Again”?
What the heck is wrong with Baltimore? We bring you two essays from American Consequences feature contributor Bill Bonner that will provide you (and, we hope, the citizens of “Pandemonium on the Patapsco”) some clarity…
How “Free Money” Has Changed Baltimore
Free money is an attractive nuisance. Whether you give it to the poor or to the rich, it has the same effect.
Donald Trump and Elijah Cummings Are Both Betraying Voters
Mr. Cummings got elected by pretending to do battle for the voters of West Baltimore. Mr. Trump got elected by pretending to fight for the forgotten voters of the heartland.
And (cheerfully changing the subject)… Did you catch Buck Sexton on Friday on Real Time With Bill Maher?
REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER Continues Its 17th Season
New York Congressman Hakeem Jeffries is the top-of-show interview guest. Activist, entrepreneur and candidate for the 2020 Democratic nomination for President Marianne Williamson is the mid-show interview guest. The roundtable guests are columnist and radio show host Josh Barro, professor and former Governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm and radio host Buck Sexton.
And let us know what you’re reading at [email protected].
