October 29, 2020
Five days ahead of the 2020 election, the media refrain is all too familiar… They’re cheering on bad news as a way to help push their own agenda. In this case, that’s ridding the country of the president they so, so detest.
Opening my phone to my Apple news feed, I see a ferocious onslaught of negative headlines…
- Coronavirus Surges to Record Levels as States Fear Massive Deaths
- How Racism Amplifies the Risk of Covid-19 for Everyone
- Millions have Flowed to Trump’s Properties from Government and GOP Since 2017
- I’m Absolutely Expecting Him [Trump] to Do Something Weird
Now, I make an effort to read all opinions from all sources… Yet the only ones Apple consistently sends me are the liberal ones (often masquerading as straight news).
I have to aggressively scour the Internet to find opposing views. You can find different points of view here at American Consequences and on my own site Trish Intel, but we must aggressively seek out other news sources because Big Tech only feeds us one side of the story.
And right now, the only story the mainstream media is selling is pure mayhem… despite 56% of the country telling Gallup it’s better off now than it was four years ago.
“Oh dear,” says the media. “It’s time to double-down on the negativity!”
This Cassandra-like hysteria is so off the charts that I believe Americans see right through it. So much so that 2020 has become not a race between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden… but Trump and the media.
In all fairness, Joe Biden doesn’t quite have the “personality” to resonate against Trump. Most often, he fades into the background. (That is, when he’s not making gaffes like forgetting who the president of the United States is as he seemed to do this past Sunday evening… until he was prompted by his wife, who reminded him it’s not “George” but “Trump.”)
Perhaps it’s by design? Perhaps the Democrat party deliberately chose someone whom they knew would fade into the background… Maybe they learned their lesson in 2016.
By running the highly polarizing Hillary Clinton, the election became very much about her. Numerous voters came to the polls not to cast a vote FOR Trump, but rather to vote AGAINST Hillary. So, by choosing Joe Biden this time around and confining him primarily to the “basement,” Democrats have assured themselves of less polarization in the turnout.
They cast Trump as the evil villain and Joe Biden as the savior. “Forget policy,” they thought. “No one wants to hear about how Joe Biden will raise their taxes… So, let’s just stick to good versus bad. Trump is bad. Biden is good.”
But a funny thing happened on the way to the forum…
The media, as you can see by scrolling through your headlines, has effectively replaced Biden. And, let’s be honest… the media, much like former candidate Hillary Clinton, is rather easy to dislike.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see some people vote for Trump just out of spite – just to see the look on the media’s face the morning after!
It’s the Economy, Stupid
Economically, Americans know what works and what doesn’t. They know our economy boomed under President Trump’s administration pre-COVID-19, GDP is improving significantly (as we are expected to see today), and unemployment sits at a level most economists assumed we wouldn’t reach until next year. And this is all without another round of stimulus!
So, why rock the boat economically, when the market is on an upswing and the economy is getting back to normal?
People are generally self-interested, which is one of the reasons capitalism works so much better than socialism. People prefer an open economy to a shut one, low taxes to high, and a certain ease of doing business rather than numerous regulations.
Meanwhile, they are really tired of the biased “fake news” media constantly telling them what to think.
This is, in part, why I believe Trump has a real shot at pulling this off… He can still win. As the old expression goes, never say never… (something Hillary Clinton and the media would have been wise to remember four years ago)
The Silent Majority Will Be Heard
First, the Republican party’s ground-game should NOT be underestimated.
Consider Florida… Now that in-person polls have opened, Republicans are coming out of the woodwork to vote. And though Dems still hold a lead in early voting (which is typical in Florida), that lead is now off more than 20% in just three days. Many Republicans in Florida don’t trust mail-in ballots… They want to vote in person, and they will. Even the most anti-Trump polls are showing a narrowed gap in Florida.
And it’s not just Florida where Trump stands a chance… TargetSmart tracks the early voting data, and though we’ve certainly seen increased intensity surrounding early voting for Democrats, Republicans are holding their own.
In Wisconsin, for example, 42% of the returned ballots come from Republicans… versus 38% from Dems.
In Georgia, where Dems are hopeful, they’ll manage a historic win… 49% of the early ballots have been from Republicans, compared to 44% from Dems.
In Texas, the majority of early mail-in ballots have come from Republicans.
In Michigan, the GOP has an early lead in returned mail-in ballots (which is pretty remarkable considering that historically, Dems have always led Michigan with a sizable early vote count).
So here’s the thing…
Trump needs Florida, and I think he can get it… If he can also lock down North Carolina (which I think he can do), Arizona, and Ohio… He’ll just need Michigan and Iowa…
Though there’s a path to winning this election without the Keystone state, given Biden’s recent comments on oil and his desire to “get rid of it,” the president might even have a shot at Pennsylvania!
Pollsters have repeatedly left out the hidden vote… the so-called “shy” Trump voter… and there are a lot of them out there.
If you wear a red hat or if you put up a lawn sign – you run a risk of hazing (or worse). So why bother taking 30 minutes out of your life to talk to a biased pollster?
The other factor in all this is the “low-propensity voters.” These are the people who have only voted once or twice in the last twenty years, and pollsters fail to count them.
Plus, COVID-19 shutdowns have prevented young people from gathering at political events. A recent report out of Michigan suggests young voters have failed to materialize in early voting efforts and, more importantly, given the shutdown, any efforts to mobilize them with ballot drives, rallies, and political events on college campuses, have been completely disbanded.
It’s unlikely many young Democrats will be flocking to the polls. Young Republicans, however, are highly motivated…
Don’t Count Your Chickens Just Yet…
Four years ago on election night, I entered my upper eastside New York City apartment elevator to make my way into the television studio for my election night coverage. Inside was a couple, smiling ear-to-ear, clutching a bottle of Dom Perignon. They were on their way to a nearby Hillary Clinton celebration party.
I couldn’t resist warning them with a smile, “Don’t pop that champagne cork too early… It could be a long night.”
“Not possible!” They told me.
Well, I was right. And… four years later, I may just be right again.
